Fleur de Lis
The Fore!Kids Foundation and the Arts Council of New Orleans teamed up to produce these Fleur de Lis that are spread around town through October, 2007.
The 40 fiberglass structures were built by Mardi Gras float king Blain Kern. Artists were chosen by the Arts Council of New Orleans and include local favorites such as Bunny Matthews, Annie Strack, Tuna Seither and Larry Nevil.
The first public art project since Hurricane Katrina, the sculptures will be sold at auction in the fall of 2007. Proceeds will go to 40 different charities supported by the Fore!Kids Foundation.

I took a pic of Craig Taylor’s Black & Gold Nation with my camera phone to have as my backgroung for the Saints Season!!! Its really cool that you guys are doing that!
When I lived in Tulsa, they had a penguin project like this. On a website they had a picture and a map of each one and the kids and I drove around all summer to see them all!
Just putting a bug in your head….they also had a book!
I’ve added a link to the map the Arts Council links to on their site. The other sites give the addresses, but we’ve listed the name of the building or location where possible, which may make it quicker for those familiar with the area to find. Between this and the map, I can see a field trip in Greta’s future!

Hey…I saw this as a blank canvas before Mr. Luis Colmenares got started I’m sure the other artist/co-creator spent hours upon hours…it’s a beautiful piece of timeless art!
Carrie, that’s one of my favorites, too. I didn’t get to enjoy it for very long, though–I don’t like to hang out for too long in front of police stations. Can you say “outstanding warrants”?
As the Man in Black said:
“Wanted man in California,
Wanted man in Buffalo
Wanted man in Kansas City,
Wanted man in Ohio
Wanted man in Mississippi,
Wanted man in ol’ Cheyenne
Wherever you might look tonight you might see this wanted man
I might be in Colorado,
Or Georgia by the sea
Working for some man who may not know at all who I might be
If you ever see me coming and if you know who I am
Don’t you breathe it to nobody ’cause you know I’m on the lam…”

What fantastic pieces of art! Wouldn’t miniature replicas be great gifts and collectibles? Any chance the artists may have these replicated as miniatures?
Diana, miniature replicas would be great! Unfortunately, I do not believe the artists have done that. Too bad!
Amazing.
those are gorgeous. my hubby was looking into getting a teaching position over there! but, it would be hard to uproot our kids…but, it looks so cool!

Hello. I was looking for an image for a Facebook group about ending discrimination within the Boy Scouts–so a Google Image search on “fleur de lis”–and I found the most fantastic one here. Would it be all right with you if I used the rainbowy one, with a thank you and a link to this page?
[...] Colmenares, who did a fish in the YLC’s Festival of Fins and a fleur de lis in the Fore!Kids Foundation, has two streetcars in YLC’s Streetcar Named Inspire. His first, “Mardi Gras [...]
I have a blogpost with pictures of the little streetcars from this year; as I could find. Please enjoy: http://heatherleila3.blogspot.com/2008/07/streetcar-love.html
Fantastic……..
(Toronto had an amusing one with cows).
Get them done as miniatures. Would be lovely souvenirs……..
Too cool for words!
These are awesome! NOLA has some wonderful artists and musicians. I loved there from 95-98 and miss it terribly. But, life just won’t get me back there right now!! Still have great friends there that I stay in contact with.
im from nola and the fleurs are beautiful
I love these Fleur-de-lis photos, I found them years ago when I was longing for New Orleans. It was a comfort to see these, the arts symbolize what New Orleans meant to me. I often use them as profile pics. So thanks, and Geaux Saints!
These are amazing works of art! I too am inspired by the fleur de lis and have just created one where I channeled a little Jackson Pollock
