Comic-Con ’09, The Good, The Bad (Ass), and The Ugly (Doll)

by

Here’s the post about my loot.  Pix soon on flickr, I promise.  That requires cooperation from my sister, my husband and my computer.  Maybe not so soon, but I’ll let you know when they are up.

This year, I had two favorite booths, and they both can be said to have a Tim Burton feel to them.  The first was Skellramics.  I LOVE their stuff.  Last year, I bought a skull mug and a cat magnet.  Still use my mug at work every day :)

This year, I saw this first and HAD. TO. HAVE. IT.:

It’s a one of a kind medium (cookie) jar.  We have on our counter a similar jar for dog bones and needed one for Sun’s cookies.  It’s perfect and I just love it more every time I see it, touch it, think of it.  Well, I wasn’t quite satisfied with just one of their pieces.  So this little number caught my eye:

I’ve worn her every day since I got her.  She’s totally my style.

The next booth I could have spent all day and all my money on was Baby Tattoo.  They sell books of many authors I really like, especially cool stuff for kids.  Last year, I bought the Artist Sisters boxed set and had each sister sign her book.  This year, I was drawn in (get it??) to Gris Grimly‘s work.  I had to exert real restraint not to go bananas here.  Grimly had his own booth at Comic Con, that included his artwork and t-shirts in addition to his books, and was doing signings every day.

Baby Tattoo informed me that Grimly was offering Little Jordan Ray’s Muddy Spud for only $10.  I was all over that, as was my sister.  I was also really taken with Grimly’s collaboration with Neil Gaiman, The Dangerous Alphabet.  This little lovely has been on the New York Times Best Seller list and for good reason.  Again, could have stayed at Baby Tattoo and Grimly’s booth the entire time.

We also got Jeff Smith (author of the popular Bone series) to sign his new book, Little Mouse Gets Ready.  This is a GREAT book for young children and the parents who will have to read it over and over.

I also couldn’t resist buying a t-shirt from Conduct Happiness for Sun, Pea in the Pool. It was between that or their new “hold your pea.”  We went with the pool theme since Sun will be returning to swim lessons next week.  What?  Pea puns not your thing?  Then how about poo puns?  Because Bored Inc. was selling tees and magnets and stickers for smarty poo, sweetie poo, stinky poo.  They even had a poo with a mo-hawk whose word bubble read, “I pity the poo!”  Good times, good times.

And finally, Sun got her second Ugly Doll, a special edition yellow Ox.  She and Ox are very happy together.

See how having a child can make you rationalize buying stuff?  Two things for me and the rest for Sun.  We won’t talk about all that CS bought.  Gah.
