How Catholic is New Orleans?

New Orleans is a very Catholic city. Here’s a little tale to show you just how Catholic it is.
CS isn’t much on religious formalities. So when he went to Liuzza’s in Mid-City a few years ago on a Friday during Lent and ordered a hamburger, it wasn’t a big deal to him. It was apparently a big deal to the restaurant. When he said, “I’ll have a burger,” a collective hush of the crowd ensued. The waitress responded, “No; we won’t serve a hamburger to you today.” “Okaay,” CS responded, “Then I’ll have a shrimp po boy.” With CS’s soul protected and undefiled, the diners and wait staff breathed a sigh of relief and resumed normal activities.
Belle, SoMo and I are going to Liuzza’s tomorrow. It’s okay to order a hamburger since it will be Thursday. But I am thinking I will play it safe and order shrimp remoulade. Oh, and a beer served in a frosty fish bowl glass.

Haha, but see, that’s what I love about New Orleans.
I miss a good shrimp po boy.
Wow! I’ve never witnessed a response like that before….That’s pretty serious.
hahahaha. everywhere from mcd’s to arby’s to wendy’s sells fish sandwiches during lent here. (pittsburgh is 50% catholic)
Hahahaha. I’m sorry but that is a hilarious story. My friends and I always talk about “Catholic guilt” in regards to anything we feel a tinge of guilt on. Eat too much? Catholic guilt. Procrastinating? Catholic guilt. Spending too much money? Catholic guilt.
I am with Sandy on this one.. I would never imagine a response like that..
Did he feel the fire washed away from his soul that day? Liuzza’s is great, but more so because they are watching out for everyone’s soul.
I wish the nice lady at the Wendy’s drive thru would be so kind to watch for my soul during Lent. I tell you this no meat thing is killing me. I must have MAIT!!!
It’s just wrong to blog about Po’boys and Remoulades, cher!
Bah… that’s NOTHING… You know how serious us Irish take this Catholic business? On Good Friday, all the pubs are closed.
Now that’s serious
My mouth is agape at xbox’s comment! We Catholics love a good beer, so to close a pub is pretty unreal!
Now, you’ve done it… now, I’m hungry. Can you believe, my peeps don’t like seafood… of any kind. *sigh* A shrimp po-boy sounds heavenly. No beer on a Friday Xbox? That is wrong on so many levels!
Wow. The whole restaurant hushed…. That is crazy.
