A Mardi Gras Mystery is Afoot
Jan 14th, 2008 by Nola
Over the weekend, the hubs and I received an odd missive in the mail. It was an invitation to the ball of a very old Mardi Gras krewe. CS was also asked to “serve on the Committee and participate in the general dancing after the fourth dance,” and I, addressed as Mrs. Captain Sarcastic, was asked to also join the Queen’s reception.
To our knowledge, we do not know anyone in this krewe. The ball is this coming Saturday. I’d have to either squeeze into an old formal dress or buy a new one in one week (not likely) and get a babysitter. We were inclined not to go.
But at lunch in the office today, I mentioned my odd missive and lo! several in my office got them, too. So many, in fact, that there is now the suggestion, a rumor, that the 2008 king of the krewe is a member of my firm.
I LOVE a good mystery. I have made gentle inquiries and studied responses. I’ve learned very little.
But intrigued I am. So now I have to get all dolled up and get a babysitter. Because even if I didn’t go to learn for myself who invited us, I am curious about the goings on at these august balls. Plus, I’ll have something good to blog about come Sunday.
Update: A dress fits! A dress fits! Now, to get a babysitter and an appointment for an updo.
Further Update: We have a babysitter!! A teenage relative. Oh, lordy! I am scared! But we are GOING!
Stumble it!

oh, but what fun! i hope you enjoy the opportunity to get dressed up and have a night out! can’t wait to read all about it…
Shaggy, Scooby and the rest of those meddling kids are on their way in the Mystery Machine.
And you said “august balls.”
Ohhhh a ball. Getting all fancified and having a night out on the town? Have a lot of fun! Can’t wait to read about it. The Krewe I am part of, well the ball isn’t really a ball and there is no fancy dress up.
Waiting with bated breath…………..
Have a great time! Nothing like a formal for the grownups to signal it’s Carnival time!
My hubby fancies anything with the word “ball” in it so I loved Pete’s comment about saying “August Balls”. He He! A guy thing me thinks. This is quite fascinating and SOOO New Orleans - the whole mystery thing. I love it!
how awesome!! both that you’re going to a ball AND the dress fits!! yay!
Ok, I’m a silly deprived Northerner who only *just* figured out what a king cake was this weekend…Now I must reveal my ignorance and ask what a krewe is…up here it’s what we do on a boat in a lake (but we spell it differently)….I’m hanging my head in shame.
Fan-tastic! As it is an old line krewe ball, I must warn you to stay awake as much as possible. Their ceremonies could well put one to sleep faster than a couple of Ambien.
Enjoy and be well!
Sounds exciting…but does that mean you are going to miss out on KdV ?? Maybe you can do both?
Leendaluu, a “krewe” (pronounced in the same way as “crew”) is an organization that puts on a parade and or a ball for the Carnival season.
Julie, I think we will miss Krewe de Vieux.
But if we can’t get a sitter, KdV is a good second choice!
Liprap, I am bracing for it! Pontchartrain Pete warned me it’d be excruciatingly boring. But I am curious to see it for myself. I may never be invited to such a blue-blood event every again!
Love the new seasonal banner.
Hubs indulged me once early in our relationsip and wrangled tix to an old line ball. He looked great in a tux, I borrowed a bridesmaid dress from my sister, and we went to the municipal auditorium. My advice: drink heavily.
I wouldn’t have traded it - it was great to get a glimpse, no, be a part of, a great New Orleans tradition. However, if you did not grow up in the august company of the high society debutants and their parents, the awe and spendor wears off and do you really care who is sitting with whom.
I can’t wait for your investigative reporter’s post after the experience!
ooooooooooo how interesting. I can’t wait to hear all about it. Have fun!
oooo, mysteries are good. but the culprit is ALWAYS the first person in the episode. oh wait … this is not a cartoon. umm, shoot.
