Pontchartrain Pete and a Cup of Joe
by
First, I want to highlight an odd occurrence, not unlike Haley’s comet. Pontchartrain Pete is posting what appears to be regularly! And he tells me that he will be posting Mardi Gras tidbits in the coming weeks.
Now a word (or two) about coffee. I tend to drink a lot of coffee but not in my home. It always seemed like such a bother to make it at home–buying the coffee and creamer, pulling the coffee pot out of the cabinet, brewing less than a full pot (or throwing the excess away).
When my in-laws come to town, I pull out all the stops and have my coffee pot on the counter with Starbucks coffee ready to go. While my in-laws were here over the holidays, they brewed coffee every morning. It was like being in a hotel, I tell ya! I got spoiled.
So now, I have kept the coffee pot out and am brewing coffee in my home every day. I love the sound of it gurgling; its rich aroma; the ritualistic quality of stirring in its sweetener and creamer; of cradling the warm mug in my hands. That first hot sip! Oh how it brings me just to the moment. Time stops; noise quiets. Everything is in that one sip.
How did I miss out on home brewing for so many years? So grab a cup of joe and go read about Mardi Gras with Pete!
I’m the only one that drinks coffee in my house, so I just have a little manual one-cup coffeemaker. Now my parents just moved here, and every time they come over they want lots of coffee. I have to keep boiling water and reloading the filter. Ugh!
I love coffee at home for all those reasons you said. Except, with two kids I barely get to drink it. I often find my cup sitting somewhere still full and cold. My hubby bought me a cool starbucks cup with a skid proof stainless bottom and lid, but I can’t microwave my coffee to reheat it in that cup. Dang! I need one of those coffee cup warmers. Do they make them battery-operated, portable and magnetically stick to your cup so as I move through the house and leave my coffee on the diaper changer it still stays hot? And it won’t burn little hands if they touch it? Excuse me as I go write a new patent . . .
I’m just not a coffee person. But by the way you had just described things, perhaps, I should just start to enjoy a cuppa more often.
I don’t know-I love the social aspect of actually going to the coffee shop to get coffee. It makes a lot more sense now that I am a stay at home mom. Some days it’s the only adult interaction I get besides phone talk but I still loved stopping in on my way to work too. For some reason when I brew it at home, it’s never good.
Belle, too funny about the patent!!! I am sure those days will come to me soon!!
Nola Mom, I too really like coffee house coffee. But with a young baby that naps intermittently throughout the day, I was finding that I couldn’t always make it to the coffee house. Brewing the coffee I bought at the coffee houses at home and buying the coffee houses’ fresh brewed coffee when possible gives me the best of both worlds.
My sis has an infant, so the last question I always ask her before I hang up is, “Should I stop at Dunkin Donuts on my way over?” She does have a coffee maker, but sometimes even that is too much!
We were always the same way! We would always just go out for our coffee-morning, noon and night…yes, sometimes that many times a day! We started making it at home here and there, but now do it all the time. I love the smell of coffee in the home, so warming! Not as good as Apple Pie though

Thanks for the shout-out, Nola! It’s good to be back in the blogging saddle, so to speak. Maybe the level of smart ass comments on Nolanotes will decrease.
Yeah, pete, that might happen…
