Dum Vivimus, Vivamus
by
A few years back, New Orleans had billboards around town that read, “Thou shalt not kill.” And a co-worker commented (sarcastically, I suppose) that maybe folks just needed to read it, to be reminded.
Sometimes I feel that way, that I need to be reminded to live, to breathe, to be at peace. Today, I need reminding. I need to remember that good health, a good job, a healthy child and loving husband, solid friendships, as well as a good book and nice knitting project–that these are all very good reasons to be happy.
So, as a reminder to myself: dum vivimus, vivamus. That’s Latin for, “while we live, let us live.”
Sometimes, we do need to remind ourselves to be grateful for what we have. Life would be happier if we know how to be contented, I suppose.
Oh sure. Get all show-offy with your latin on us.
It is hard to remember sometimes.
I thought “dum vivimus, vivamus” was latin for “stupid is as stupid does.”
That came from my “Latin for the Illiterati” phrase-a-day calendar. What, don’t you guys speak latin daily??
I totally agree.
I got that from a translation of the original Latin The Meditations of Forestus Aurelius Gumpus.
Pete, blog it out, brother. Blog it out.
Thanks, NOLA. I was in need of a reminder as well!
*snort* at you and Pete.
Y’all are hysterical.
Great advice Nola, it’s not often enough that we step back and look instead of just rushing through!
