My mother was/is always one to go overboard with gift-giving. In a big way. I remember talking to a friend and she said she got six gifts because there was six members in her family. I was appalled. That was until she told me what her gifts were: hand-made gifts from one and all. Then I realised the difference between spending and giving. Now that I’ve grown up, we give from our heart a small selection of gifts to our children and they do seem to be genuinely content.

I am so with you. Santa only brings Owl one or two things. With all the grandparents and aunts and uncles, there are already too many toys. I remember the first time my mother realized how little he actually got under the tree. She was shocked an appalled. But I have found it easy to resist. I am sure you will, too, because it’s not part of your nature (or CS’s) to be acquisitive. True happiness comes fromwithin, and your traditions and new memories will warm her heart when she looks back on her childhood, too.

good for you! especially at 6 months old…what the heck is she ever going to remember about this year, anyway! even if you change your mind, and next year…you go all out…she’ll never remember that you hadn’t done much, in the way of gifts, her first year!!!
