Music Nobody Knows (But I Love)

Southern Mom tagged me for this meme. And in so doing, she shamed me such that I cannot ignore her.
Here are the rules: list seven songs you are into right now. No matter what they are. They must be songs you are presently enjoying. Then tag seven other people to see what they’re listening to.
I own an Ipod that I listen to all the time, and I have a favorites list with about 35 songs on it. So it was easy for me to at least know what songs I’d chose from. I did not have time to link to these songs, so if you really want to hear them, I am afraid you’ll need to go find them on your own (I doubt many of you will).
The first song is “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” by the Byrds. I realized today that this song was written by Bob Dylan. Explains why I like it so much. It’s quirky and gets me in a good mood. When I was in law school, I was, well, a groupie to a local band called Big Sun. They are no longer together. They did their own songs, but occasionally did cover songs. They played this song a couple of times and I have loved it ever since. I like that he says that “tomorrow’s the day my bride’s gonna come.” Bride. Not wife. So hopeful. I also like the lyric, “Tie yourself to a tree with roots. You ain’t going nowhere.”
Next, Bob Dylan’s “Positively 4th Street.” A lot has been written about this song and who Dylan may have been singing about, and nothing I will write here will be of significance. But, man, I LOVE this song. He is so pissed off at someone and yet the song is so upbeat and lyrical. The sound of it puts me in a good mood. My favorite part is, “I wish that for just one time You could stand inside my shoes And just for that one moment I could be you Yes, I wish that for just one time You could stand inside my shoes You’d know what a drag it is To see you.” I know I’ve felt that way about someone (as a matter of fact, I feel that way about someone right now).
Third, my favorite Elton John song, “Roy Rogers.” I LOVE the “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” album, and this is my favorite song on it (that’s saying a lot). There’s so much I like about this one! Favorite line: “Oh, I’d rather have ham on my sandwich than cheese but complaining wouldn’t do any good.”
Still with me? On to Four. “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley. Love me Mr. Marley. And “Three Little Birds” is the bee’s knees for me. I defy, DEFY, you to listen to this song when you are down and not feel happier half way through. It’s guaranteed to put me in a better mood.
Number Five, “So Lonely” by the Police. I really can’t not list them. I was a HUGE fan all through college. But it was their early work that I truly love, and of that, this one rises to the top. It’s full of angst. Perfect for a college girl. Favorite line, “In this theater that I call my soul, I always play the starring role.”
Moving right along, Six is Supertramp’s “Lord is it mine.” I love Supertramp’s “Breakfast in America” album even move than Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” I got the album (on tape) because a brother of mine moved out and left it behind. I played this tape so much one of my other brothers said that when I died, they’d have to put it in the coffin with me. I hope they do! “Lord is it mine” is not a pick-me-up song. But when everything is wrong and all is a question, this is the song for me. It won’t make my toes tap, but it is so SPOT ON when I feel really blue, that it helps to know someone else has been where I am. That gives me peace enough to keep going.
And finally, my favorite song these days is No Doubt’s “Bathwater.” I love ska, and I love the honesty this song portrays–her man is a player, she fully knows it, but damn if she can’t help wanting him anyway. BEEN THERE!!
In compiling this list, it freaked me out that the “newest” song on this list is at least seven years old, and the others are DECADES older. But I feel that with all these great songs already in my world, who’s got time for new songs? Plus, that’d mean I’d have to give less play time to these. Blasphemy.
Since I am new on the blogosphere (and feel it impolite to tag someone I don’t “know”), I am taking the out Wendy offered to me: I tag anyone who is interested to join in and list your Top 7 Current Favorite Songs.
Stumble it!

Good songs. I love those Dylan lines you quoted. I definitely know what it feels like!!!
Three Little Birds happens to be one of my all time favorites too.
Ah man, I remember the ain’t going nowhere song. I can still hear it in my head. I think of rocking on the front porch.
Do you remember the night we drove together to see Big Sun in some gas station turn bar? Or was it next to some close down gas station. I remember you warning me that you would play that Supertramp cassette all the way home. I think I like Supertramp, because of that.
Great songs. I can’t believe you like No Doubt. Learn something new everyday.
